La Galera was founded in 1963 by Andreu Doria i Dexeus. Despite the difficult political climate of the time, Andreu Doria intended his new house to mark a renewal in publishing for young people, and focused from the beginning on promoting quality modern literature, launching authors such as Emili Teixidor, Josep Vallverdú, Joaquim Carbó and Gabriel Janer Manila, with illustrators such as Pilar Bayes, Maria Rios and Carmen Sole, now all considered classics.
In 1992, La Galera was integrated into the group Enciclopedia Catalana. Iolanda Batallé, previously editor at Random House Mondadori Spain for nine years, took the helm in September 2009 with the aim of making the company once again a cornerstone of Spanish and Catalan publishing for young people. Since her arrival, La Galera have launched new YA imprint LUNA ROJA with Francesc Miralles' RETRUM, now in its third edition in less than three months, with seven translation deals in place. Other titles in LUNA ROJA include HUSH HUSH by Becca Fitzpatrick, WINGS by Aprilynne Pike and TEMPUS FUGIT by young Spanish author Javier Ruescas. They will publish German publishing sensation RUBINROT by Kerstin Gier this Autumn, together with SKYLAND, Islands in the Sky, a YA saga created by Piemme.
In March 2010, La Galera launched a crossover imprint, BRIDGE, with HE JUGADO CON LOBOS by Gabriel Janer Manila, a novel based on the real life story of an "enfant sauvage", with a film due for release on 5th November starring Javier Bardem, Juan José Ballesta, Sancho Gracia. THE EVOLUTION OF CALPURNIA TATE by Jaqueline Kelly and THE BEAN TREES by Barbara Kingsolver follow this Autumn.
The GRAPHIC NOVEL imprint sees the publication this October of BIG NATE by Lincoln Pierce, while in imprint NARRATIVA SINGULAR they will launch Isabel del Río's first novel LA CASA DEL TORREÓN, "a mixture of Neil Gaiman, David Lynch and Alice in Wonderland."
For much younger readers, La Galera are launching the COMIC imprint with Art Spiegelman's TOON BOOKS, BENNY AND PENNY by Geoffrey Hayes and SILLY LILLY by Agnès Rosentiehl.
Most recent acquisitions include Janet Foxley's MUNCLE TROGG; Wendy Wunder's THE PROBABILITY OF MIRACLES; WARRIORS by Erin Hunter; and THE PLEDGE by Kimberley Derting.
